September General Meeting
Our next general meeting will be September 1st at RIM Park. Please note that because of extensive renovations at the McCormick Community Centre we will be holding our General Meetings in Rooms 207/209 at RIM Park for most of the next the next couple of years. You can access these rooms most easily by going in the East Entrance of the Manulife Sportsplex and Healthy Living Centre and proceeding up the stairs to the second floor.
Speaker Dan Kennaley: Some History of Fly Fishing in Ontario
Dan will be talking about some early fly fishing in Algonquin Park (circa 1915) including controversy about how much fly fishing was actually occurring there at that time. Dan will also talk about Tom Thomson, the artist and the fly angler. Additionally, Dan will talk about local boy and Kitchener-Waterloo Collegiate and Vocational School alumnus, James Emanuel Hahn, and the contributions he made to fly fishing in Ontario after he graduated from high school in 1910. These contributions included his company, Inglis Canada, producing fly fishing equipment after the 2nd World War.
Fly Tying
Our September Fly Tying Meeting will be held on Thursday, September 24th. Please note the date change, usually fly tying is the third Thursday of the month. The guest tyer will be Ian Troup, a guide and international fly fishing competitor and currently a member of Team Canada. Ian will be tying three dry fly patterns. Tying starts at 7 p.m. at Steve May’s house, 252 Montclair Place in Waterloo.
Hall of Fame Award
Ken is a founding member of the KW Fly Fishers, a life member, and is also currently a Director of the club with a special interest, among others, in promoting and managing our library. He is a member of the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters, Freshwater Conservation Canada (formerly Trout Unlimited Canada) and the Anglers of the Ausable (Michigan).
Ken has been fly fishing for over 50 years from the east coast to the west coast in Canada and the U.S. He has given many workshops at the Canadian Fly Fishing Forum and for several fly fishing clubs including many presentations for the KWFF. He has written articles for the FFF Flyfisher magazine and the Ontario Fisherman Magazine including a three part series in the Ontario Fisherman Magazine in 1984 entitled Ontario Mayfly Hatches which remains on the best sources of information for anglers on that topic. Ken has also contributed a chapter in The Fishing Book: Sportfishing in Ontario (1990) on Brook trout and a chapter in the book Fly Fishing Canada (2001) on fly fishing for Brook Trout.
